Head Start

Head Start

Head Start is a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families.

Program Description

Greene Lamp Head Start is a comprehensive child development program serving low-income three and four year old children and their families in Lenoir and Greene Counties. Priority is given to four-year olds. Head Start provides services to 311 children and their families. Children must be 3 or 4 years of age on or before August 31st. The program’s major goal is to provide a child development program that will encompass educational, medical, dental, nutritional, mental health, social services, and parent needs, as they relate to the individual child and his/her family and community. Children with special needs are mainstreamed with other children. Head Start receives $1.5 million in federal funding from the Department of Health and Human Services. A 20% match is provided by local agencies, local vendors, and volunteers. The Head Start project provides services to children for 6 hour days (8:30 am – 2:30 pm).

“I love the EHS program. Everyday my daughter is excited about going to school. She is doing things that I didn’t think she would be able to do at this age like counting in English and Spanish, naming her colors and singing songs. Thank You so much.”

“The EHS program has shown me that children can learn at any age. This program provides an opportunity for children of all ethnic backgrounds. It really does take a village to raise a child. I have enjoyed working with a group of women that want to strive for a better future for our children.”

“The EHS program has been very beneficial in that the training offerings that are being provided have improved the quality of my teaching staff. I also like the way Greene Lamp promotes teamwork among the staff and other centers. I also like the fact that Greene Lamp shows an interest and genuinely cares about what is going in the center.”
